BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn baseball team bounced back from a Friday afternoon loss to beat Mount St. Mary's Saturday afternoon, 12-10. With the win, the Blackbirds move to 13-18 overall, and 4-9 in the Northeast Conference.
As has been the case all season with these two teams, the contest was a back and forth affair from the start. Once again, Mount's Patrick Causa got his team on the board in the first half of the first inning, with a home run over the left field fence.
The Blackbirds would get in the game in the bottom of the second inning. After junior
Andrew Turner was hit by a pitch to lead off, a walk and a single by senior
Anthony Capo would load the bases. Sophomore
Luis Arias de los Santos came up next, and would reach on a Mount fielding error that would score LIU's first run of the game. A sacrifice fly by senior
Charles Misiano made it 2-1, and junior
Dom Paiotti would single to right field to score LIU's third run of the game.
The Mountaineers answered in the top of the next frame, when a three-run homer gave the visiting team a 4-3 lead. The Mount would increase the lead in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs on five hits to make it 8-3.
The Blackbirds started to close the gap in the bottom of the fourth. With two walks and a wild pitch putting runners in scoring position with one out, sophomore
Joe Mercadante would have an RBI ground out to make it 8-4. Sophomore
Edward Modica Jr. was up next, and had a long triple to center field that would add one more run to the total. And Turner brought him home from third with a single through the left side, to make it 8-6.
The Blackbirds retook the lead for good in the bottom of the next inning. Freshman
Joe Curcio led off with a double, and Capo executed a perfect bunt down the left field line, beating the throw to put two runners on. And Arias put LIU back on top, when he hit a three-run home run over the left field fence, 9-8. The Blackbird offense wasn't done yet; Misiano would double down the left field line, and Modica would walk to put runners on the corners. With two outs, Turner would add three more runs to the total with his home run over the left field fence, 12-8.
Mount would score one run in the top of the eighth and the top of the ninth, but reliever
Mike Kreiger would get the third and final out, ending the game and clinching the Blackbird win, 12-10.
Freshman
Jackson Svete (5-1) had the win on the mound, pitching seven innings for LIU.
Up next, the two teams wrap up the series with a nine inning contest, scheduled for Sunday, April 23 at 1 p.m.
