BROOKLYN, N.Y. --- LIU Brooklyn Softball ended its current six-game home stand with a 9-1 non conference loss to Stony Brook Wednesday afternoon at LIU Field.
The Blackbirds (15-21) were never able to gain traction against the Seawolves (6-16) after surrendering five first inning runs, including a pair of two-run homers.
Senior
Shelley Procter brought the Blackbirds' lone run home in the bottom of the second with a two-out RBI single down the third base side.
Stony Brook would tack on another run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to set the final deficit for the Blackbirds.
PREGAME PROGRAM
Before the contest, LIU held a pair of presentations in conjunction with its inaugural Breast Cancer Awareness Game. First, the Blackbirds honored former Stony Brook softball player Danni Kemp, who passed away from brain cancer earlier this season. The team also acknowledged the program's fundraising efforts for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (nearly 90% of their $3,000 goal) and had cancer survivor Kathy Griffin - mother of LIU's
Patricia Griffin - throw out the first pitch of the game.
NEXT UP
LIU will take on some of the top teams in the NEC over the weekend, with doubleheaders against Sacred Heart and Robert Morris on April 8 and 9.
