EMMITSBURG, Md. --- A string of Day 2 victories and elite performances pushed the LIU Brooklyn men's track team to the cusp of the NEC Outdoor Championship title. In the end, the Blackbirds finished in second place (134 points), 12.5 points behind eventual team champion Central Connecticut State (146.5 pts).
LIU surged from a fourth place end to Day 1 to claim runner-up status by winning nine of its meet-leading 11 total medals (7 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze) on Championship Sunday.
Senior
Adam Walker-Khan was named Meet Most Valuable Performer after following up his long jump title from Saturday with two more medals on Sunday. Walker-Khan finished second in the 400 meter hurdles (54.56) and third in the triple jump (46-8.25/14.23m) to bring his two-day scoring tally to 24 points.
The honor of Most Outstanding Track Performer in the Sprints was awarded to sophomore
Caleb Williams after he contributed to two titles, three medals and 28 points on Sunday. Williams was first in the 100 meters with a time of 10.44 and ran the second leg of the Blackbirds' winning 4x100 meter relay team along with sophomore
Roderick Moodie, and seniors
Delano Davis &
Karl Cajuste (41.04). Williams also took second in the 200 meters after running 21.30 - .01 second behind winner and team Davis (21.29).
Sophomore Deshawn Bunion had a hand in LIU's two other titles on Sunday, running the best time in the 400 meters (49.14) and joining freshman
Kwesi Henderson, senior
Garvey Moore and Cajuste on the first-place 4x400 meter relay squad (3:17.07).
LIU's other medal on the day was a silver earned by senior
Jahphan Lupuku in the triple jump (46-11.50/14.31m).
The team's other scoring was provided by:
- Sophomore Sean Sinclair in the 200 meters (7th, 21.92, 2pts) and 100 meters (8th, 10.85, 1 pt)
- Cajuste in the 400 meter hurdles (4th, 55.21, 5pts) and 110 meter hurdles (7th, 15.00, 2pts)
- Henderson (50.03, 3pts) and Moore (50.37, 1 pt) in the 400 meters
- Moodie in the 110 hurdles (4th, 14.35, 5pts)
- Junior Tobias Nelson in the 400 hurdles (6th, 55.87, 3pts)
