BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn field hockey team opens the 2017 season this weekend, heading south to take on two teams in the Philadelphia area. The Blackbirds open the season Friday, August 25 taking on Lehigh at 7:30 p.m., before facing off against LaSalle, Sunday, August 27 at 12 p.m.
This will be the second-ever season for LIU's newest sport program, and the first under new head coach Kyle DeSandes-Moyer.
"We are very excited to start the season, simply because it's a completely restructured team with a lot of new, talented personnel," DeSandes-Moyer said. "We have very talented freshmen who we can't wait to see how they perform on the field! We have a small squad, but it is one we are very confident in. We really believe in each player, and the impact they will have on the team this year!"
The Blackbirds return 12 players from the program's inaugural season, and added six new faces this summer. Three co-captains lead the squad: sophomores Casey Carrigan and Madi Cook, as well as senior Amy Reid, a transfer from Missouri State.
LIU will be looking to improve on last year's results, as the all-freshman squad went 0-15 in a competitive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). The Blackbirds were picked to finish seven in the MAAC Preseason Coaches poll released on Tuesday.
