KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team had a 2-0 lead at the halftime in its season opener against Western Michigan, but saw the Broncos score three goals in the second half to take the win, 3-2. WMU scored the deciding goal of the game with just nine minutes left to play.
The Blackbirds got on the board early in their first road game of the year. Junior
Romario Guscott had a shot 13 minutes into the game that got through the WMU goalie's hands; junior
Rasmus Hansen was there to finish the shot, putting LIU on top, 1-0.
Guscott widened the lead 18 minutes later, when WMU was called for a yellow card in the box. Guscott took the penalty kick and successfully converted his opportunity, putting LIU up, 2-0. LIU would hold on to the lead into the second half.
WMU got on the board for the first time 12 minutes into the second half. A ball was deflected at the top of the 18-yard box, and WMU's Nathan Hoover took the shot from there to put the Broncos on the board, 2-1.
LIU's defense would hold WMU from there, despite heavy offensive pressure from the home team. WMU would take three shots and have three corner kicks over the next 20 minutes, but the Blackbirds managed to withstand the pressure until the 77
th minute.
The Broncos would even the score with 13 minutes left to play in the game, scoring off a header in the box. The home team rode the momentum from there. LIU goalie
Cole Palmer made a save with 10 minutes left to play that kept the score tied at 2-2, but a minute later, the Broncos would score off a free kick to take the lead, 3-2.
The Blackbirds were able to put the offensive pressure in during the final minutes of play, but a shot by sophomore Marius Kuss was high, and WMU would run out the clock to take the victory in the first contest of the season.
Romario Guscott led LIU with a goal and an assist, while
Rasmus Hansen had his first goal of the season. Up next, the Blackbirds head to Detroit to take on host Detroit Mercy, Sunday, August 27 at 2 p.m.
