BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Despite a quick strike from the visiting Howard Bison on a sunny and hot Sunday afternoon, the LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team rallied to score three goals on LIU Field, earning its first win of the season, 3-1. Sophomore
Giuseppe Barone had the game-winning goal for the Blackbirds, along with an assist.
Howard pressed LIU right from the start, using early corner kicks to put pressure on the offensive end. The Bison would score on the second of those, just a minute and 46 seconds into the game. Victor Guirma would score off a header on a corner kick to put the Bison up, 1-0.
LIU would tie the game up over 25 minutes later, finally getting on the board in the 30
th minute. Junior
Naeem Charles would cross the ball in front of Howard's net, and junior
Rasmus Hansen was there to finish it, tapping it into the corner past the Bison's goalie to tie it up, 1-1.
Five minutes later, Barone would score the go-ahead goal in the 35
th minute. Barone dribbled it into the box and beat his defender, flicking it over the diving goalie to make it 2-1 Blackbirds. Neither team would score for the rest of the half, and LIU took a 2-1 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Bison would get several shots on net, but LIU keeper
Cole Palmer was there to stop them all, registering three saves in the second half.
The Blackbirds would add an insurance goal in the 71
st minute. The Howard keeper took a chance and came out to defend against a charging
Romario Guscott. After Guscott was able to escape his attack, the Bison net was left unattended. Guscott and Barone were able to get the ball over to junior
Filip Nordström, who put the ball in the net to give LIU the 3-1 cushion.
Though Howard would continue to pressure the LIU defense as the second half wound down, the Blackbirds evaded any final goals, and took the win, 3-1.
With the win, LIU moves to 1-5-1 on the season. Up next, the Blackbirds head south to take on La Salle, Wednesday, September 27 at 7 p.m.
