Grigoryan Competes at 2017 Oracle ITA Masters

MALIBU, Calif. – LIU Brooklyn women's tennis junior Anna Grigoryan competed at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's 2017 Oracle Masters tournament this past weekend, taking on some of the best collegiate tennis players in the nation.
 
The annual event is invitation only, based mostly on national rankings; Grigoryan earned a spot after being named the Northeast Conference's Player of the Year in 2016-17.
 
The event, hosted at the Malibu Racquet Club and Pepperdine University, took place from September 21 to 25th, and had both singles and doubles brackets consisting of the best Division I men's and women's tennis players in the nation.
 
Grigoryan opened the tournament taking on one of the top seeds in the draw, North Carolina's Alexandra Sanford. The ITA ranked Sanford, a freshman, in the preseason poll as the No. 6 newcomer in the nation. She was selected as the No. 6 overall seed in the draw, and went on to win the singles bracket, beating all but two of her opponents in straight sets.
 
In her first round match against Sanford, Grigoryan fell, 6-1, 6-1, and moved to the consolation bracket.
 
There, Grigoryan had a defeat of a nationally ranked player. In the first round, she faced off against Lipscomb's Viktoriya Dzuyuba, who is ranked No.99 in the nation. After falling in the first set, 6-3, Grigoryan rallied back to beat Dzuyuba in three sets, 6-5, 6-2.
 
From there, she fell to another top-100 player, Claudia Herrero Garcia of Nevada in the second round. Grigoryan took the first set, 6-4, but lost in three sets after Garcia came back to win the next two sets, 6-2, 6-0.

Up next, Grigoryan and the Blackbirds are set to take part in the Hofstra Invitational, September 29-30.
