BOONE, N.C. - The LIU men's soccer team had a 1-1 double overtime tie at Appalachian State Sunday afternoon. Senior Naeem Charles scored the lone goal for the Blackbirds in the contest, who are 0-2-1 thus far.

The Mountaineers got on the board early, when a foul in the box seven minutes in resulted in a penalty kick. The home team would convert the opportunity, and led, 1-0.

The Blackbirds put the offensive pressure on throughout the game, but wouldn't get the tying goal until the 72nd minute. Junior Rasmus Hansen had a cross in the box, and Charles was there to finish it in quick fashion, tying the game up, 1-1.

Sophomore Zach Peterson would have a header shot with two seconds left to play, but the App State goalie made the save, and the game went to its first overtime period.

In the first overtime, sophomore Giuseppe Barone had a shot that was high, but the LIU defense wouldn't let the Mountaineers ever get a shot off. With the score still knotted at 1-1, the two teams went to a second overtime period.

Junior Romario Guscott kept the pressure on, firing a shot off just ten seconds into the period, but it was blocked. The Blackbirds kept the home team from scoring for the remainder, and the game ended with the two teams deadlocked, 1-1.

Senior Michael Ramsey had four saves in the net for LIU in 110 minutes of action. Naeem Charles led the offensive charge with four shots, and the only goal for LIU, while Rasmus Hansen had three shots on net and the assist. Guscott had two shots, while Barone, Peterson, Erik Wahlin and Daniel Quiros Herrero all had shots in the contest as well.

Up next, the Blackbirds return to Brooklyn for their first game on LIU Field this season; LIU will host NJIT, Wednesday, September 6 at 6 p.m.
