Women's Swimming Heads to Wagner Saturday

  • The Blackbirds are coming off their most dominant wins of the season, two non-conference victories over Monmouth and Saint Peter's last week. LIU won 13 of the 14 events, including two relays.
  • Sophomore Noemie Lacroix-Moreau won three individual events in the meet, including the 1,000 freestyle (11.16.98), 100 backstroke (1:02.71) and the 50 butterfly (27.95) and was named a Prime Performer by the NEC this week.
  • Freshman Amanda Peren also won three solo races last week, with top times in the 50 and 100 freestyle as well as the 200 individual medley.
  • Team captain Milly Furneaux had the top performance of the meet, breaking her own LIU school record in the 50 breaststroke (a non-championship distance) by 0.08, coming in at 30.88.
  • This will  be the third time Wagner and LIU have seen each other in the pool this season. Wagner finished seventh to LIU's 11th at the Frank Elm Invitational at Rutgers back in November. And then the ECAC Championships in December, the Seahawks won the title for the second consecutive year, as the Blackbirds finished in fourth place.
  • For a preview of the NEC Championships next month, a showdown looms in the two freestyle sprints between a pair of recent ECAC champions: LIU's Briana Vega, the winner of the 50 freestyle, and Wagner's Andrea Gustafsson, the winner in the 100 freestyle. Both juniors hold the NEC-leading times in those events. Gustafsson also won the 100 butterfly and was named Female Swimmer of the Meet at ECACs.
  • Saturday's meet will be the first visit to Wagner for the Blackbirds in the three-year history of the LIU program. The Seahawks are 2-0 all-time in the inter-borough battle.
