Track Excels At Armory Dr. Sander Invitational

NEW YORK, N.Y. --- The LIU Brooklyn track and field teams converged on the world famous Armory Track & Field Center this weekend for the Dr. Sander Invitational Armory Challenge.


MEN'S TOP PERFORMANCES
  • The Blackbird men ran  2-3 in the 4x400 relay - sophomore Colin Sewell, junior Deshawne Bunion, freshman Justin Brown, and junior Braylon Wilkerson were runners-up with a time of 3:15.58 and LIU's second entry of sophomore Kwesi Henderson, sophomore Beresford Sweeney, freshman Alban Lefeuvre and senior Airrin Davis ran a time of 3:21.09. The second place team set the newest conference-leading time and an IC4A/ECAC qualifying mark with their effort.
  • Sewell and junior Ernest Agyeman claimed the top individual performances for LIU, each placing third in the 200 meters and 60 meters, respectively. Sewell crossed the finish line in 22.23 and Agyeman ran a 6.88. Both results were IC4A/ECAC qualifiers and Sewell's mark is tied for sixth on the NEC list.
  • In the 200 meters, Wilkerson (5th, 22.30), junior Logan Jones (6th, 22.30), junior Sean Sinclair (9th, 22.37) and junior Caleb Williams (13th, 22.66) each placed in the top-15 of the event.
  • Brown had a top-10 performance in the 400 meters, posting a 49.52 time that was good enough for ninth place. Bunion and Jones did the same in the 500 meters: Bunion placed fifth with a time of 1:04.12 (IC4A/ECAC qualifier) and Jones ended up in ninth with a time of 1:05.41.

WOMEN'S TOP PERFORMANCES
  • Sophomores Taylor Parker and Stephanie Esogenwune provided the LIU women with their best meet results in the shot put and triple jump, respectively. The Blackbirds each finished third in their events - Parker logged an IC4A and ECAC qualifying toss of 44-6.25 (13.57m) on her first attempt and Esogenwune leaped 37-9.5 (11.52m) on her fourth try.
  • Junior Eugenie Hue placed in the top-10 with her effort in the 800 meters, running a 2:16.46 that moved her into the top-five of the NEC performance list.
  • Junior Shantae McDonald resides atop the NEC performance list in the 60 meter hurdles after running 14th in the meet with a personal best time of 8.77.
  • Junior Cayla Coleman (11th in 800 meters, 2:20.50), junior Ashley Blackwell (15th in 200 meters, 25.61), Esogenwune (17th in long jump, 16-8.75/5.10m), freshman Tara Hernandez (18th in 500 meters, 1:18.64) and freshman Courtney McNeil (20th in 200) ended their events in the top 20.


NEXT UP
LIU will compete in its first championship meet of the year, the Metropolitan Championships on Friday, February 2, in Staten Island.
