Swimming Sweeps Stony Brook and Sacred Heart

BROOKLYN, N.Y. --  The LIU Brooklyn women's swimming team swept both Sacred Heart and Stony Brook in a double-dual meet at the LIU Pool on Saturday, making the Blackbirds 7-0 for the first time in the four-year history of the swim program. LIU cruised past Stony Brook, 177-84 and their NEC rivals Sacred Heart, 174-88, winning eight of the 14 races on the day.

Two-time Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week Amanda San Juan won both distance races for the third time this season, breaking the school record in the 1000 freestyle (10:49.40) by two seconds and taking the raced by 27 seconds. She also won the 500 freestyle in 5:19.07, winning over teammate Jeanne Touchette-McGowan (5:22.80).

Senior Mads Carrigan won her first individual event of the young season, taking the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.69, winning over her opponent by nearly a full minute.

Classmate Briana Vega won her signature event, the 50 freestyle in 24.11, topping her teammate, freshman Lydia Amon, who came in second (25.25). In the 100 freestyle the two LIU swimmers took second and third place behind SHU's Lauren Somers, currently the top timeholder in the NEC in all three freestyle sprints.

Junior Noemie Lacroix-Moreau took first in the 100 butterfly in 58.92, winning that race by 0.46 seconds over Sacred Heart. LIU sophomore Amanda Peren was victorious in the final solo event, the 200 individual medley, taking the gold in 2:11.61, a second and a half over her Sacred Heart counterpart.

The Blackbirds swept both relays on Saturday as well, taking the 200 medley relay to start the meet and the 400 freestyle relay to close out the meet. A squad of Peren, Carrigan, Addison Donahue and Vega swam 1:50.39 to edge out the Pioneers relay by 0.22 seconds. In the 400 free relay, Touchette McGowan, Lacroix-Moreau, Amon and Vega came in at 3:38.48 to finish the meet on a high note.

In other results: Touchette-McGowan (1:57.59) was second in the 200 freestyle… Peren (59.27) and senior Nathalie Meyers (1:01.12) went 2-3 in the 100 backstroke, while Touchette-McGowan (2:10.67) and Peren (2:11.86) went 2-3 in the 200 backstroke… San Juan (2:12.78) and Lacroix-Moreau (2:14.80) were second and third in the 200 butterfly…

The Blackbirds will be back at it next Saturday, November 3, as they travel to Loretto, Pa., to face NEC rival Saint Francis U. The meet is scheduled for an 11:00 a.m. start.
