BROOKLYN, N.Y.— The LIU Brooklyn field hockey team had two student-athletes earn All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference honors as announced by the league office on Thursday evening. Freshman Eva van Wakeren garnered All-MAAC First Team honors and junior Marisa Batista was named to the All-MAAC Second Team.
Van Wakeren is the first Blackbird to earn All-MAAC First Team honors after a standout rookie campaign. She garnered MAAC Rookie of the Week three times and paced LIU in scoring with 24 points and 11 goals on the season, setting program marks for both single-season and career points. Her scoring output also ranked among the conferences leaders as she ranked third in goals and fifth in points.
Batista was defensive standout for the Blackbirds, starting all 17 games on her way to All-MAAC Second Team honors. As a leader on LIU's defensive unit, she has started all 50 games in her career in downtown Brooklyn.
It is the first time in program history that LIU has earned two All-MAAC distinctions in the same season.
LIU closed out the 2018 season 2-15, 0-5 in MAAC play.
