BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- The LIU Brooklyn Women's Swimming team opened their 2018-19 season with a two-day double dual meet at their nearest rival St. Francis Brooklyn. Following the first seven events, the Blackbirds trail the Terriers 58-51, but lead the third school, the Manhattan Jaspers, 73-27. The action concludes tomorrow at LIU Pool at 11 a.m. with the remaining ten events on the schedule.
The Blackbirds won three events on day one, which includes one of the two relays contested and a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 individual medley.
The event started out with the 200 medley relay, where the Blackbirds 'A' and 'B' teams finished in second and third place respectively. On the 'A' team was sophomore Amanda Peren, freshman Mackenzie Burnett, sophomore Kyleigh Barao and senior Briana Vega in a time of 1:51.99.
Next up was a second place finish by freshman Amanda San Juan in the 500 freestyle, in a time of 5:11.35, which is already the second fastest 500 free in team history.
The clean sweep in the 200 IM followed afterwards, as Peren (2:11.58), classmate Jeanne Touchette-McGowan (2:13.91) and senior Mads Carrigan (2:14.27) kept their two opponents off the podium, with Carrigan even clearing the field by 2.5 seconds.
Vega, one of the team's co-captains this season, dominated in the 50 freestyle, coming in at 24.17. Freshman Lydia Amon took fourth place in her debut in 25.35. Senior Nathalie Meyers was right behind in the event, clocking in at 25.84.
The Blackbirds closed out the afternoon with a first and third place finish in the 400 freestyle relay, behind the top team of San Juan, junior Noemie Lacroix-Moreau, Vega and Peren in 3:38.47. The 'B' team of Touchette-McGowan, Amon, Carrigan and Alyssa Juris finished with a time of 3:44.61.
