BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- The LIU Brooklyn women's soccer team fell to Northeast Conference rival Wagner 1-0 in overtime, on Blackbirds' alumni day at LIU Field on Saturday. In the fourth minute of overtime, freshman Luisa Barone hit a long strike from outside the penalty box that curled in the far corner of the net to give the visitors their first NEC win of the season.
In regulation, the Blackbirds (2-9-3, 0-3-1) outshot the Seahawks, 10-6 and in shots on goal 6-3, but were unable to find the back of the net in the first ninety minutes of play. A season high eight players took a shot in the match and as LIU finished with an 11-9 final advantage in shots and had two more corner kicks (4) than Wagner. Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Virgin made three saves 97 minutes of action for the Blackbirds.
Wagner (1-10, 0-3) had a combined shutout from starter Katie Viscardi and Delaney Beck (33 minutes), as Viscardi had to be helped off the field after sustaining an injury in the 65th minutes.
Next up, the Blackbirds will have a split away/home NEC weekend up next, with a match at Fairleigh Dickinson next Friday, Oct. 12, before returning to Brooklyn on Sunday, Oct. 14 for the final home contest of the season.
