STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn softball team opened the Northeast Conference season in style Friday afternoon, rallying to beat Wagner in extra innings, 7-6. The second game of the double header was suspended after three and a half innings due to unplayable field conditions. Wagner led game two, 6-2; the makeup date is to be determined.

GAME ONE: LIU 7, Wagner 6 (8 innings)
The Seahawks took an early lead in the afternoon contest, as their leadoff batter had a home run to put them up, 1-0. But the Blackbirds would answer right away, scoring a run in the top of the second. Senior catcher Victoria Zamora led off, and was walked. The catcher stole second, and advanced to third on a single from freshman Ryleigh Bermea. Zamora would come home on the next play, when senior Angie Vazquez singled to left field, and the score was tied, 1-1.

Wagner would retake the lead in the bottom of the third frame, using an RBI single and a two-run homer to go up, 4-1. Bermea would help make up ground in the top of the forth, as the freshman hit a home run over the left field fence to cut the gap to 4-2. Wagner would add a run in the bottom of the frame to take a 5-2 lead, but in the top of the fifth, the Blackbirds started staging a comeback. LIU would see Alina Castillo, Katie Hinkle, Kiana Cisneros and Patricia Griffin hit back-to-back-to-back-to-back singles to score a run, and load the bases. Zamora would clear them with a double down the left field line, putting the Blackbirds on top, 6-5.

Wagner would tie the game up in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI single, and neither team would score in the seventh, forcing the game into extra innings. In the top of the eighth, senior Nereyda Gutierrez would lead off with a single. Evie Claussell came in pinch run, and she came home two batters later, when Vazquez doubled to right center field, putting LIU on top, 7-6. Sophomore Haley Irvis finished the game on the mound for LIU, and in the bottom of the eighth, she got the Seahawks to fly out and strike out twice, ending the game and giving the Blackbirds the win.

GAME TWO: WAGNER 6, LIU 2 (suspended after 3.5 innings)
In the second game of the day, Wagner would lead off with a home run once again, but the Blackbirds came back to tie it up right away. Zamora led off with a single, and Bermea would hit an RBI double to tie it up, 1-1. Vazquez came to the plate and singled, advancing Bermea to third, and Dickson had a sacrifice fly to right field that would bring her home and put LIU on top, 2-1.

Wagner would answer by scoring five runs in the bottom of the frame to take the 6-2 lead, shortly before the game was suspended due to unplayable field conditions. The two teams will resume the game on a date to be determined.
