Softball Beats NKU 6-1 In Final Game Of EMU Tourney

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. --- The LIU Brooklyn softball team concluded its fourth tournament of the season on Sunday afternoon, defeating Northern Kentucky, 6-1, ok the final day of the Eastern Michigan / Madeira Beach Invitational.

For LIU, the victory was another display of resilience early in the season, ending a second tournament with a winning record after failing in the tournament prior. It also represented the Blackbirds' second largest win differential of the year, after LIU's 10-run win over George Washington on February 17.

The Blackbirds scored their first three runs on three consecutive at-bats in the first inning. Junior Schae Dickson broke through with a sacrifice fly that scored sophomore Katie Hinkle, freshman Ryleigh Bermea singled up the middle to bring home fellow newcomer Kiana Cisneros, and senior Nereyda Gutierrez drove in junior Patricia Griffin with a single up the middle.

Junior Evie Claussell tacked on a fourth run in the bottom of the third, hitting the third of three straight two-out singles to right field that sent Gutierrez home.

NKU managed an RBI single in the fourth inning to make the score 4-1 but the Blackbirds added two more to their ledger in the sixth with back-to-back RBI doubles from Bermea and Gutierrez.

Gutierrez finished a perfect 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI while Vazquez matched her output (3-for-3) and Griffin went 3-for-4.

Freshman Victoria Lowe pitched all seven innings and struck out a team season-high six batters while only allowing four hits, one run and two walks.

TOURNAMENT RECAP
LIU hit .319 over five games as a collective and had six players bat better than .300. Gutierrez had the best average of the six (.500) despite recording the fewest at-bats (4-for-8) and Hinkle produced the best mark for anyone that played in all five games (.389; 7-for-18).

Senior Erynn Sobieski picked up two of LIU's three wins and the team's first shutout win of the year. Lowe logged the lowest ERA (2.02) and struck out the most total batters (13).

NEXT UP
LIU will return to Florida next weekend for the Florida Atlantic Parents' Weekend Tournament, which will take place from March 9-11.
