Women's Basketball | Mar 05 | Waithe Named NEC Women's Basketball Player Of The Week BROOKLYN, N.Y. --- Senior DeAngelique Waithe has earned the final Northeast Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week award for the 2017-18 regular season, the league announced Monday afternoon. The honor - the first of Waithe's career - came at the most opportune time for the Blackbirds. She scored 20 points in back-to-back games for the first time ever, helping LIU win its final two games over Bryant and Central Connecticut and clinch the No. 6 seed in this week's NEC Tournament. Waithe averaged a double-double over the weekend (20.5 ppg on 57.7 percent shooting, 11.0 rpg) and added 4.0 blocks and 3.5 assists per contest. Waithe posted 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting, six rebounds and three assists in LIU's 69-61 victory over Bryant and followed that performance with her 11th double-double of the season (team-high 21 points, career-high 16 boards), four assists and four blocks in a 63-57 win over CCSU. Saving her best for last has been Waithe's theme all season: she is putting up career numbers across the board - 12.6 ppg, 8.9 rpg, 1.9 bpg, 1.8 spg, a 51.2 FG percentage and a 69.6 FT percentage. She is even shooting 50 percent from behind the arc after hitting her first-ever three pointer back on February 10 versus Robert Morris. The award is the third NEC Player of the Week honor for the Blackbirds this year, adding to graduate transfer Denisha Petty-Evans' two honors (11/20, 1/24). It is also the team's sixth overall NEC weekly award after freshman Jeydah Johnson picked up three Rookie of the Week laurels this season (11/20, 12/11, 2/7). LIU will face No. 3 seed St. Francis Brooklyn in the quarterfinals of the NEC Tournament on Wednesday, March 7 at 7:30 p.m. at No. 2 Robert Morris' North Athletic Complex in Moon Township, Pa. The game will be broadcast on NEC Front Row. Players Mentioned Bio DeAngelique Waithe #10 F 6' 0" Sr. Bio Jeydah Johnson #0 G 5' 10" Fr. Bio Denisha Petty-Evans #15 G 5' 10" Gr.
