BROOKLYN, N.Y. – In the last women's lacrosse game on LIU Field this season, LIU Brooklyn fell to Mount St. Mary's Sunday afternoon, 18-10. Prior to the game, the Blackbirds (3-11, 0-5 NEC) honored four members of the program graduating:
Candice Mosal,
Taylor O'Connor,
Sierra O'Connor and
Christina Zolezzi. All four of the seniors scored points for LIU, as Mosal had a goal and an assist,
Sierra O'Connor and
Christina Zolezzi had goals for LIU, and
Taylor O'Connor had an assist, and four ground balls in the loss.
NOTES FROM THE NEST
- Mount (8-6, 3-2 NEC) would take the win based on first half scoring surges. In the second half, the two teams were tied in goals scored, with eight apiece.
- The visiting team would score first, on an early free position shot, but freshman Amanda Masullo answered with a solo shot just 45 seconds later to tie it up, 1-1.
- MSM would score four straight before LIU got on the board again. Senior Candice Mosal would connect with classmate Sierra O'Connor to score with just under 18 minutes left in the half to make it 5-2.
- Mount ended the half scoring five unanswered goals, to take a 10-2 lead into the halftime break.
- LIU came out on fire in the second stanza. Sophomore Bianca Santucci would score just 43 seconds into the period off a pass from Rachel Masullo. Amanda Masullo scored off a pass from Taylor O'Connor, and two minutes later, Rachel Masullo scored an unassisted effort to cut the lead to 10-5.
- Yellow cards would prove costly for LIU, as Mount scored the next four straight, two with man up advantage, to take a 14-5 lead.
- Rachel Masullo and Christina Zolezzi fired off unassisted goals, and junior Dale Cosgrave would score the next two goals for the Blackbirds. Senior Candice Mosal scored the last goal of the game with just 40 seconds left.
- Mount won by a final score of 18-10.
STATISTICAL STANDOUTS
- Both Amanda Masullo and Rachel Masullo had two goals and an assist to lead the Blackbirds. Amanda finished with six draw controls, two ground balls and a caused turnover as well.
- Junior Dale Cosgrave also had two goals for LIU, along with two ground balls.
- Taylor O'Connor had an assist, four ground balls and four caused turnovers on defense.
- Freshman Elise Person had three ground balls and three caused turnovers, while freshman goalie Sam Kidd had a team-high six ground balls along with six saves.
UP NEXT
The Blackbirds head south to take on the Pennsylvania contingent of the Northeast Conference, squaring off with Saint Francis U. and Robert Morris next weekend.
