BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn field hockey team continued to rake in academic accolades this spring, as the National Field Hockey Coaches' Association National Academic Squad and national Scholars of Distinction were announced, and LIU is featured in both. The Blackbirds had 14 members of the team named to the All-Academic Squad, while Lauren Alburg, Eveline Gielisse and Lydia Trout were named Scholars of Distinction.
Only 140 student-athletes from all of Division I field hockey were selected as 2017 Zag Field Hockey / NFHCA Division I Scholars of Distinction. The Division I Scholars of Distinction program recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher through the first semester of the 2017-18 academic year.
Additionally, the three, along with most of their teammates, were named to the National Academic Squad. The Division I National Academic Squad program recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2017-18 academic year.
The Blackbirds singled out were Lauren Alburg, Casey Carrigan, Jenna Chrabolowski, Madi Cook, Olivia Dennis, Bridget Elison, Eveline Gielisse, Molly Jannell, Amy Reid, Eva Scholten, Skai Sprenkle, Lydia Trout and Gillian Vallaster.
The honors are just the latest for the program, who earlier in the spring were awarded with 2017 Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award for the second straight season. In addition, it was announced that the Blackbirds had one of the highest GPAs in the country, coming in fourth overall with a team GPA of 3.59.
