NEC HONOREES
Last night, it was announced that LIU had two major Northeast Conference award winners this year, led by senior catcher Victoria Zamora, who was named the NEC's Golden Glove winner, while freshman Ryleigh Bermea was named the NEC Rookie of the Year. Both also earned first team All-NEC honors.
Senior Angie Vazquez also earned first team All-NEC honors at third base, while redshirt sophomore Patricia Griffin was named second team All-NEC in the outfield. The four honorees was the highest for LIU since the team's championship run in 2016.
SCOUTING THE RED FLASH
Saint Francis, the defending NEC tournament champions, are the team to unseat this weekend, but it won't be an easy task. The Red Flash went a perfect 16-0 in NEC regular season action for the second year in a row, and now have a 35-game conference win streak going.
The Red Flash are led by newly announced NEC Player of the Year, and C0-NEC Pitcher of the Year, Abby Trahan. Trahan set a single-season record for wins in the circle this year, pitching to a 2.28 ERA this season, and a 0.61 ERA in conference play.
Earlier this season, SFU swept the Blackbirds at home in two shortened games.
UP NEXT
Regardless of today's results, the Blackbirds have at least one more game remaining, as the tournament is a double-elimination format. A win advances LIU to the winners' game on day three, while a loss gives them a shot at the loser of the second game of the day.
