BROOKLYN, N.Y. --- The LIU Men's Outdoor Track & Field team is set - the starter's pistol is pointed up to the sky, the boldest go blazing down the straightaway - will the Blackbirds, one of the strongest teams in the league finally cross the finish line first? That is the goal this weekend at the 2018 Northeast Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted once again by Mount St. Mary, in Emmitsburg, Maryland, Friday and Saturday, as the team kicks off championship season with the IC4A's and the NCAA Regionals to follow in the coming weeks.
"As a coach, we are always excited to contend for a title," said longtime head coach Simon Hodnett. "I just really want the teams to have focus, have fun, and believe that all things are possible. And If they can do those three things and execute, then we will make history and return to Brooklyn with the school's first track and field teams at LIU to win a conference title during the same championship."
AT THE 2017 OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
CCSU held off runner-up LIU Brooklyn to win by 12.5 points. LIU senior Adam Walker-Khan won the long jump on Saturday, notching his fourth straight NEC outdoor title in the event. His 24 points were enough to earn the Most Valuable Performer honor. Caleb Williams earned the "Fastest Man in the NEC" title, clocking in at 10.44 to lead a 100m dash field in which all eight sprinters posted IC4A qualifying times. Williams also took silver in the 200m dash and ran the second leg of the Blackbirds' triumphant 4x100m relay performance en-route to the NEC Most Outstanding Track Performer (Sprints) award.
AT THE 2018 INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
LIU Brooklyn swallowed a bitter pill, as they were stopped just short of their "Drive for Five," as winners of the previous four NEC Indoor titles (2014-17), as the Blackbirds settled for second place behind CCSU. Sean Sinclair won the 200m dash (21.72), while Collin Sewell took the 400m (48.50) and Braylon Wilkerson won the 500m (1:03.96). The trio teamed up with Kwesi Henderson to win the final event, the 1600m relay (3:17.60).
TOP LEVEL PERFORMERS
Heading into NECs, the men's team has made a substantial mark on the conference's performance lists. LIU athletes currently account for 11 top-three entries throughout the event list, including six first place marks, three second place marks and two currently standing in third place.
- Collin Sewell: 200m Dash (21.16, 1st); 400m (47.16, 1st)
- Kareem Roberts: High Jump (2.16m, 1st)

- Alban Lefeuvre: 400m Hurdles (54.12, 2nd)

SIMON SAYS
"Sewell and Wilkerson are rounding into shape at the right time," said Hodnett. "They are ranked in the East Region and we are hoping for better performances in their respective events. Also we will be looking for Sean Sinclair and Caleb Williams to also assist us big time if we are to be successful this weekend. Both athletes have the ability to win their events, so we are looking for that big performance this weekend to help excite our sprint group. We have big expectations for the entire team. Especially from Roderick Moodie, Alban Lefeurve, Kwesi Henderson, Deshawn Bunion, Logan Jones, Ernest Agyeman and Justin Brown. I always want our athletes to just try their best, because when they do, we are successful as a group."
"In the field, Belle and Roberts have been consistent in their respective events this outdoor season, so we will expect nothing less the consistent performance that they have been having. We have very little depth in the field events as we have had in the past, so we will need strong performances from both Kareem and Clinton in order for us to contend for a title," said the veteran coach.
