BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The LIU Brooklyn athletic department had a record-breaking year in the classroom, finishing third in the league's academic standings, it was announced by the Northeast Conference Wednesday afternoon. The Blackbirds finished with a department GPA of 3.401, just two-hundredths of a point behind conference leader Saint Francis University (3.423) and second-place finisher Robert Morris (3.420). All three schools broke the NEC's previous GPA record of 3.381, set by Sacred Heart last year.
The NEC also recognized those teams that compiled the highest GPAs in their respective sports, and LIU had a league-best six Team GPA awards. Both baseball and women's tennis both won NEC Championships this year, and Team GPA awards. Bowling, men's golf, women's lacrosse and men's soccer also had the highest GPAs in their sports.
Additionally, the 3.834 grade point average compiled by the LIU Brooklyn men's golf team was the
highest in any sport this past academic year.
Overall, the NEC's 4,500+ student-athletes once again shattered the league record with a combined 3.281 GPA for the 2017-18 academic year. The record has now been broken in each of the last four years. The previous mark set in 2016-17 was a 3.239 GPA. All ten NEC institutions finished the year with over a 3.0 GPA and 81.7 percent of NEC teams posted a 3.0 or better GPA.
