BROOKLYN, N.Y.— The LIU Brooklyn field hockey team continues its non-conference slate this weekend with a trip down to North Carolina. The Blackbirds face off against Appalachian State on Friday, August 31 before concluding the trip with a meeting with Davidson, Sunday, September 2.
Last Time Out
LIU opened the season with a pair of one-goal defeats losses to Saint Louis and Colgate last weekend. Sophomore Jenna Chrabolowksi netted the Blackbirds first goal of the season on Sunday against the Raiders from the assist by freshman Eva van Wakeren. Junior Molly Jannell finished the weekend with 18 saves.
Scouting the Mountaineers
Appalachian State is in a midst of a four-game homestand to start the year. The Mountaineers split the opening weekend, defeating Towson 2-0 in the season opener before falling to Georgetown 2-0.
This is the second meeting all-time for the Blackbirds and Appalachian State, last meeting was back in 2016. Redshirt-sophomore Casey Carrigan netted the lone LIU goal on the assist from junior Lydia Trout in the loss to the Mountaineers.
Scouting the Wildcats
Davidson also hosted the Hoyas and Tigers as part of a five-game homestand to open the season. Georgetown prevailed in the opener over the Wildcats 1-0 after scoring in the opening minutes. Davidson turned things around against Towson, netting two-second half goals to win 3-1.
The Blackbirds and Wildcats meet for the third straight season. Davidson beat LIU in penalty shootout 3-2 to cap the 2017 regular season. Davidson, N.C. also marked the first-game in program history back in 2016. Junior Skai Sprenkle recorded the program's first-ever goal in the loss to the Wildcats.
