BOONE, N.C.— The LIU Brooklyn Field Hockey team fell to Appalachian State, 6-3 on Friday night. First-year midfielder Eva van Wakeren registered her first multi-goal game for the Blackbirds.
The home team got on the scoreboard first halfway through the opening period on a goal by Chloe Bell. App State added its second score in the 28th minute on a goal by Ali Williams to take the 2-0 had at 27:57. LIU responded less then two minutes later as van Wakeren recorded her first career goal on a deflection from the pass by redshirt-sophomore Casey Carrigan. A conversion on a late penalty corner in the waning seconds of the opening half gave the Mountaineers the 3-1 lead into the break.
Appalachian State continued to apply the pressure offensively adding three more goals to open the second half. It was van Wakeren once again for the Blackbirds with the rebound goal off the assist from junior Gillian Vallaster in the 55th minute. Junior Madi Cook tallied the Blackbirds final goal in the 69th minute.
Junior Molly Jannell recorded eight saves in 70 minutes of action for LIU.
