BROOKLYN, N.Y.— The LIU Brooklyn Field Hockey team concludes its stretch on the road to start the season with two games at Holy Cross and Providence this weekend.
The Blackbirds open with a 6:05 p.m. match against the Crusaders on Friday, September 14 before ending the weekend against the Friars on Sunday, September 16.
LAST TIME OUT
LIU was held off the scoreboard for just the second time this season, falling to an undefeated Georgetown team on last Friday, 7-0. The Blackbirds battled Towson on Sunday, tying the score at 1-1 in the first half with junior Lauren Alburg's first career goal in the 24th minute. LIU outshot Towson 9-8 in the second half but the Tigers snuck by three more goals to take the 4-1 win.
SCOUTING THE CRUSADERS
Holy Cross (0-5) enters the weekend searching for its first win of the season. The Crusaders are coming off a 4-1 loss to Fairfield last Friday and a 1-0 loss to Columbia in the home opener last Sunday. Madeline Alderfer is the top point scorer for Holy Cross with one goal and one assist through five games.
Friday night's matchup features two of the nation's leaders in saves per game. LIU's junior goalkeeper Molly Jannell ranks fourth in the country with 8.83 saves per game while Marcia LaPlante leads the nation with 15.2 saves per game for the Crusaders.
SCOUTING THE FRIARS
Providence (3-4) is coming off a weekend split this past weekend after beating New Hampshire 2-1 and dropping a close 1-0 decision to 14th ranked Iowa. Allyson Parker and Izzy Mendez pace the Providence offense with three goals each. Lydia Rice is the team's primary goalkeeper, recording a 1.67 goals against average in six games.
UP NEXT
The Blackbirds make the first appearance in downtown Brooklyn on Friday, September 21 with a 4:00 p.m. contest against Lock Haven. It is the first of a three-game home stand at LIU Field.
