BROOKLYN, N.Y.— LIU Brooklyn field hockey freshman Eva van Wakeren was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday afternoon. 
The first-year forward tallied three goals and six points in the Blackbirds two-game weekend in North Carolina. She registered the first two goals of her career on Friday night at Appalachian State. van Wakeren got the Blackbirds on the board in the 29th minute on the defection goal off the assist from Casey Carrigan for her first score. She ended the night with a goal in the 54th minute for her first career multi-goal game. To cap her weekend, the Netherlands native recorded a goal in the second half of Sunday's game at Davidson. van Wakeren ranks among the MAAC leaders with seven points through the first four games of the season. 
The Blackbirds embark on the second half of the eight-game road stretch to open the season this weekend. First, LIU will take on Georgetown on Friday, September 7 before concluding the weekend at Towson on Sunday, September 9.
