Women's Bowling | Feb 10 | Bowling Gets Second Place at Golden Bear Classic Story Links 2019 Golden Bear Classic Final Bracket SINKING SPRING, PA. -- After a 4-1 start on Saturday in the Golden Bear Classic at Berks Lanes, the LIU Brooklyn bowling team had a chance to win the tournament on Sunday, but the Blackbirds (39-32) were taken down for the third time this weekend by No. 24 Adelphi in the championship match. Still with a 9-3 record in the three days at Kutztown's event, the No. 17 Blackbirds brought home second place, their first team trophy this season. LIU sophomore Kellie Frain was named to the All-Tournament Team with a 19.1 baker pinfall average. The three-match bracketed playoff started with a matchup of the top two seeds, the Panthers and the Blackbirds. Behind a lineup of Kellie Frain, Sarah Florence, Jennifer Roback, Tyler Karpinecz and Kayla Johnson, LIU pushed Adelphi to the brink, but fell in the best-of-seven games (220-163,188-194, 235-156, 195-181, 178-190, 192-215, 179-248) match, 4-3. In their second match, LIU faced new Northeast Conference foe Mount St. Mary's, and won in six games, 4-2 (157-205, 203-185, 217-165, 216-180, 146-200, 192-202, 177-173) with three 200+ games in the match. Now, back in the championship match versus AU, the Blackbirds fell two games down (160-184, 175-203), before squeezing out game three (179-169). Down 2-1, LIU lost game four (163-204), putting Adelphi on the precipice, before winning game five (182-171), and falling in game six (180-187) to give the title to the Panthers. The Blackbirds will have next weekend off, before returning to Berks Lanes for the final weekend of Northeast Conference play (Feb. 22-24) with the final two rounds of league regular season action.
