LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Freshman Elena Valenzuela (2-1) threw her second complete game win this weekend for the LIU Brooklyn softball team in a 4-1 win over Stetson at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in the team's finale at the Diamond 9 Citrus Blossom Invitational. The Blackbirds (4-6) went 2-3 in Florida this weekend, winning two of the three starts with Valenzuela in the circle.

The game was a pitcher's duel for the first three and a half innings, with Valenzuela and her counterpart, Tori Perkins keeping the game scoreless. The Blackbirds broke through in the bottom of the fourth frame when senior Amanda Domingo hit a two run single to score Alina Castillo from third and Ryleigh Bermea from second base with the winning run.

With the score 2-1 in the fifth inning, Castillo and Bermea hit back-to-back RBI singles to give the Blackbirds a three-run lead, 4-1. Stetson got their lone run in the top of the seventh, on an Ashly Smith RBI single. Reliever Jaime Tino (1-3)  took the loss for the Hatters (2-5), as Perkins, the starter got a no decision after throwing 4.2 scoreless innings.

That would be enough run support for Valenzuela, who went 7.0 innings, giving up seven hits, one earned run and had three strikeouts in her second win of the season.

ON DECK: The Blackbirds will keep heading north in Florida for their third event of the early season, making the school's first appearance in the Jacksonville Classic, hosted by Jacksonville from Feb. 22-24. LIU will open that event against Harvard on Friday, Feb. 22, then play a pair against Delaware, before facing the host Dolphins twice to finish up the event on Sunday.
