PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The LIU Brooklyn women's lacrosse team dropped its 2019 season opener on the road at Rutgers Thursday afternoon, falling to the Big Ten's Scarlet Knights, 20-3.
 
Rutgers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on the Blackbirds, but Amanda Masullo would get LIU on the board seven minutes into the game. The sophomore would score her first goal of the season on a free position shot to make it 4-2.
 
Freshman Isabelle Peng would score her first collegiate goal just two minutes later, when she scored on a free position shot to make it 6-2. And sophomore Elise Person would score her first goal of the year ten and a half minutes into the game, on a third free position shot to cut the RU lead to 7-3. But from there, the Scarlet Knights would continue to roll, and eventually took the win, 20-3.
 
Goalies Virginia Gibbons and Sam Kidd would combine for 12 save in the loss. Person led LIU with four shots, along with two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Senior Carlie Robinson had a team-high three ground balls, while Masullo had four draw controls in the loss. Rachel Masullo and Bianca Santucci also registered two shots each, while freshman Kaylee Riggins had two ground balls and two caused turnovers in her collegiate debut.
 
The Blackbirds will hit the road to take on La Salle, Saturday, February 16 at 1 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa.
