The Blackbirds are in 18th place in a field of 29 teams with a 188.4 scoring average, going into Sunday's best-of-seven baker ladder tournament. The Blackbirds started out the day with two straight wins, topping Alabama-Birmingham first, 967-836, behind a 225 from junior Tyler Karpinecz and a 224 from sophomore Jennifer Roback. Then came a 952-837 win over Elmhurst, as senior Kayla Johnson threw a 258 to lead the way. Next up for LIU was 12th-ranked Tulane, who beat the Blackbirds 1014-920, even though Johnson (207) again threw over 200 in the match. Fourth-ranked Arkansas State followed, and LIU fell, 907-1056, despite a 210 from Roback. In their final match, LIU was defeated by Drury, 883-928. The Blackbirds will start Sunday's bracketed playoff against UAB at 8:30 a.m., with two more matches to follow, as the Music City Invite comes to a crescendo.
