NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The LIU Brooklyn women's tennis team capped their regular season with a 7-0 sweep of Sacred Heart Saturday night, finishing a perfect 5-0 in Northeast Conference play. It is the third season in a row that LIU had a undefeated regular season record in the NEC.
In dominant fashion, the Blackbirds swept SHU in all six singles spots, dropping only one set, and also winning two of the three doubles matches.
In doubles action,
Jessica Brzozowska and
Sasha Bollweg notched the first win of the day, beating their opponents in the No. 2 spot, 6-2. From there,
Anna Grigoryan and
Ana Leonte clinched the doubles point with their 6-2 win in the No. 1 doubles spot. SHU's lone win of the day came at No. 3 doubles, where the Pioneers won, 6-3.
Singles action saw LIU clinch the win with three quick straight set wins. Brzozowska was first, as she beat Brianne Lauria at No. 2, 6-0, 6-1. And Grigoryan made it 3-0 with her 6-1, 6-2 win over Olivia Podsiebierski at No. 1 singles. Leonte clinched the match for the Blackbirds when she defeated Sabrina Navarro at No. 5, 6-2, 6-4, and
Clemence Krug made it 5-0 with her 6-3, 6-3 win over Adrianne Alfonso at No. 6. Bollweg completed the sweep for LIU, rallying to win in a tiebreaker, as she beat Keira Tobia at No. 2 signles, 6-4, 5-7, 12-10.
Up next, the Blackbirds head to West Winsor, N.J. to take part in the NEC Championship tournament, April 18-20.
