Women's Bowling | Apr 15 | Johnson to Compete in USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championships Story Links EVENT HOME PAGE BROOKLYN, N.Y. – LIU Brooklyn bowling senior Kayla Johnson is in Dayton, Ohio this week, to take part in the 2019 United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Intercollegiate Singles Championships, as one of 24 bowlers nationally who qualified out of four sectional fields. The 2019 Intercollegiate Singles Championships will have 24 men and 24 women competing for individual national titles April 15-20 at Poelking Lanes South. Johnson, who hails from nearby Edison, N.J., qualified for the event in March, by finishing sixth out of a field of 159 bowlers at the 2019 Intercollegiate Singles Sectional Qualifier in Stratford, N.J., which is just east of Philadelphia. In six rounds of qualifying, Johnson started with an outstanding 258, followed by scores of 179, 219, 164, 215 and 215, to finish with a total pinfall of 1,250, to clinch the final automatic qualifying spot from the sectional field. She will be the first LIU Blackbird to compete at Nationals since Alyssa Balicki qualified during her junior season in 2017. It felt amazing when I found out I qualified," exclaimed Johnson. "I felt really confident overall bowling that weekend, at the end of the competition I knew it was going to be close. I don't have a ton of goals or expectations, all I want to do is bowl well. It's an honor just to make it to the top 24 and I just want to make the most of this opportunity." Qualifying games and match play take place Tuesday, April 16 and Wednesday, April 17, with singles semifinals and finals taking place Saturday, April 20. "This season was tough for the team and it didn't end the way that anyone wanted," continued Johnson. "But I am glad that I get the opportunity to compete with the Blackbird on my back one more time. It's been a couple weeks since we finished up team competition and it's weird not having my teammates with me. This is definitely a good way to complete my senior season, and career at LIU as a whole. I can't wait to get started."
