BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- LIU Brooklyn softball sophomore Ryleigh Bermea was named the Northeast Conference Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon. It marks the first time this season, and the second time in her career Bermea has earned the league honor. She was also named the NEC Player of the Week by College Sports Madness.
Bermea, the reigning NEC Rookie of the Year, broke out in a big way this past Saturday in LIU's doubleheader sweep over Mount St. Mary's (6-3, 8-1) as the Blackbirds moved to 5-1 in NEC play. The all-star center fielder went 3-for-6 at the plate with a triple, a home run and seven runs batted in over the two games to earn the Lynn DeVivo Bao Player of the Game on Alumni Day. In game one, the Saugus, California native was 2-for-3, starting with a three-run triple in the first inning, then providing the eventual game-winning RBI in the third with a single - her fourth RBI of the contest. In the nightcap, she hit a three-run homer over the left field fence to put the game away and help give the Blackbirds the sweep.
The Blackbirds will head out to Stony Brook, Long Island for a non-conference tilt on Wednesday (3:00 p.m.), before coming back to LIU Field for two more NEC doubleheaders on Friday (1:00 p.m.) and Saturday (3:00 p.m.) against Central Connecticut and Wagner, respectively.
