Daytona Beach, Fla.-- The LIU Brooklyn men's golf team takes their turn at the Northeast Conference Championship in Daytona Beach, Florida beginning on Friday morning. The three-round championship will be played at the LPGA International on the Hills Course from Friday, April 26 to Sunday, April 28.
LIU AT THE 2018 CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Blackbirds finished in eighth place, shooting a combined 69-over 933 (318,313,302) over the three-day event. Leading the way or LIU was 2018 graduate Kyle Maihi, who tied for 27th place overall with his tournament total of 23-over 239 (76,83,80). Next on the leaderboard was senior George Helsby at 25-over 241 (80,80,81), who landed in a tie for 29th.
TEAM OUTLOOK
LIU Brooklyn is looking to build on recent success, with the Blackbirds finishing in the top-10 three times in their last five tournaments. The evident improvements from the fall to spring season have come with help from a solid senior leadership in seniors Daniel Reale and George Helsby and a strong freshman campaign from Kyle Underwood.
15-year head coach Michael Michaelides had nothing but positive comments regarding his teams recent performances. "The seniors have been very instrumental in the development of the underclassmen. Setting a great example and pushing them to be better, I expect them both to have a strong tournament. Kyle has been wonderful and on fire, his game has really rounded out and he's shown a lot of heart and tenacity." Michaelides continued on the teams pack mentality, "It's evident how close they are and how they push each other, defend each other and really behave like a family."
CHAMPIONSHIP FORMAT
The NEC Championship is a three-day, 54-hole event, scores are calculated by adding a team's four lowest scores from each day. The top ten finishers will be named to the NEC All-Tournament Team.
