STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn women's lacrosse team fell on the road to Wagner on a rainy Friday afternoon, 19-10. With the loss, LIU moves to 6-10 overall this season, and 3-3 in the Northeast Conference.
Wagner would get on the board first, scoring just over two minutes into the contest. From there, the Seahawks scored seven more unanswered goals, to take an 8-0 lead in the first ten minutes.
The Blackbirds would get on the board with 14 minutes left in the first half, when freshman
Kaylee Riggins scored an unanswered goal. Wagner would add one goal, but three minutes later, junior
Bianca Santucci scored on a free position shot to make it 9-2. Seven minutes later, sophomore
Rachel Masullo also scored on a free position goal, and a minute later,
Amanda Masullo scored to cut the lead to 10-4. The Masullo sisters would combine on the last goal of the half for LIU, as Amanda passed it to Rachel, who scored to make it 11-5 at the break.
The Blackbirds also got off to a slow start in the second half, allowing Wagner to score four unanswered goals before they got back on the board.
Rachel Masullo would score ten minutes in, off a pass from sophomore
Elise Person, cutting the gap to 15-6. And 30 seconds later, Person found junior
Bianca Santucci, who scored to make it 15-7.
Wagner would score four more times before the game was over, but Blackbirds kept the offense coming, including goals from Riggins, Person and Santucci again. In the end, the Seahawks came away with the 19-10 win.
Senior goalie
Virginia Gibbons made eight saves in the loss for LIU. Sophomore
Amanda Masullo had a team-high 10 draw controls, along with a goal and an assist.
Rachel Masullo and
Bianca Santucci led the Blackbirds with three goals apiece. Sophomore
Elise Person had a goal, two assists, three ground balls and three caused turnovers for LIU, while freshman
Kaylee Riggins had two goals and an assist.
Up next, the Blackbirds travel south to take on Mount St. Mary's, Sunday April 28 at 1 p.m.
