SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The LIU Brooklyn women's lacrosse team had their three game win streak snapped Sunday afternoon, as preseason favorite Bryant beat the Blackbirds, 14-7. LIU (4-8, 1-1 NEC) led the Bulldogs (6-5, 2-0 NEC) for nearly 30 minutes in the contest, but saw a second half scoring surge from the home team give Bryant the win.
Bryant would score first, and led 1-0 for nearly 10 minutes, as neither team would score. But then the Blackbirds added two goals from
Bianca Santucci and
Bridget Neiley, to take a 2-0 lead over the Bulldogs with 15 minutes left in the first half. From there,
Rachel Masullo and
Amanda Masullo scored back-to-back goals to give LIU a 4-1 lead. Bryant would score twice before the period was over, but LIU led, 4-3 at the halftime break.
The second half was a battle from the start. Bryant would score twice in the first five minutes to take a 5-4 lead, but a goal from freshman
Isabelle Peng tied it up. And then sophomore
Amanda Masullo would score on a free position shot to give the Blackbirds the 6-5 lead with 18 minutes left to play.
But over the next 12 minutes, the home team would find their scoring groove, and score eight unanswered goals to go up, 13-6. Sophomore
Elise Person would score once more on an unassisted attempt with just under five minutes to play, but it was the last time LIU would get on the board, and Bryant took the win, 14-7.
Sophomore goalie
Sam Kidd had 15 saves for LIU in the loss.
Up next, the Blackbirds return to downtown Brooklyn to host Sacred Heart on LIU Field, Sunday April 14 at 11 a.m.
