Track and Field Opens Outdoor Season at Hurricane Invitational

The Long Island University outdoor track and field teams began their season at the Hurricane Invitational over the weekend in Coral Gables, Fla. The men's 4x400 meter relay team finished first in the event, pacing the field in 3:16.65 and senior Selina Munoz (San Diego, Calif.) placed third in the women's 800-meter run with a time of 2:16.24.
 
The women excelled in the jumping events led by senior Heather Patton (Bowie, Md.) in the triple jump. The senior earned a leap of 12.40 meters to take second place in the event, the highest individual finish for the Blackbirds. Patton qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships with her effort. Freshman Jessie Gaines (Chesapeake, Va.) placed fifth in the long jump with a distance of 5.55 meters. Gaines also added an 18th place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.22
 
Junior Aniecia Williams (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) followed Munoz in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:18.47 to finish in eighth place. In the 100-meter dash, junior Ashley Veney (Ithaca, N.Y.) placed 19th after a time of 12.57. The women's 4x100-meter relay team garnered a fourth place finish and ECAC qualifying spot  with a time of 47.19 and the 4x400-meter team was fifth after posting 4:04.71.
 
On the men's side, sophomore Samuel Egadu (Eastern Uganda) turned in an IC4A qualifying time of 21.76 in the 200-meter dash to finish ninth. In the 400-meter dash, senior Sheldon Goffe (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took 11th place with a time of 49.54. Sophomore Vincent Gangemi (Staten Island, N.Y.) finished 800-meter run in 2:00.30 to take 11th.  The 4x400-meter team also qualified for the IC4A's with its time of 3:16.65.
 
Junior Dan Renahan (Coram, N.Y.) earned a 10th place finish in the 5000-meter run with a time of 16:11.32. The Blackbirds' 4x100-meter relay team placed fourth after achieving a time of 41.68 and qualifying for the IC4A Championships. In the high jump, freshman Adham Conaway (New Haven, Conn.) was sixth with a height of 1.90 meters.
 
Long Island will continue its outdoor campaign March 27-28 at the Raleigh Relays in Raliegh, N.C.
