Track and Field Posts IC4A Qualifiers, Patton Breaks Triple Jump Record at Metro Championships

– Highlighted by senior Heather Patton's record breaking performance in the triple jump, the Long Island University women's track and field team finished second at the Metropolitan Championships in Leonia, N.J. The men's team placed third and garnered four qualifiers for the IC4A Championships.
 
Patton broke her own school record in the triple jump with an NCAA Regional qualifying leap of 12.70 meters, besting the old LIU mark of 12.40 meters and finishing first in the event. Junior Ashley Veney paced the field in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.75. Freshman Jessie Gaines took home a second place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.19.
 
The Blackbirds took third and fourth in the 200-meter dash behind runs from junior Joyce Atagwe and sophomore Christine Jones who finished in 25.18 and 25.76, respectively. Sophomore Danay Spencer finished right behind Patton in the triple jump with an ECAC qualifying leap of 12.39 meters
 
On the men's side, senior Andre Marcano won the 100-meter dash and was an IC4A qualifier with his time of 10.65. Taking third place was freshman Nickolei Mahlungwho turned in a time of 10.80 meters and also qualified for IC4A's. Mahlung also took third place in the 200-meter dash, right behind senior Shavar Clarke who placed second in a time of 21.64, also qualifying for IC4A's.
 
Long Island took the top four slots in the 400-meter dash led by sophomore Samuel Egadu who crossed the finish line in an IC$A standard time of 47.84. Egadu was trailed by junior Julius Mutekanga, senior Jeremy Alvarez and freshman Robert Barnes. In the long jump, the freshman pair of Amire Solomon and Adham Conawaytook the top two spots with jumps of 7.05 and 6.41 meters, respectively.
 
The Blackbirds' 4x400 meter relay team was the top finisher, posting a time of 3:12.69. Junior Eric Tyler earned a second place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.75. Junior Dan Renahan placed sixth in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:04.00.
 
LIU returns to the track at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa on April 23-25.
