West Point, N.Y. - Long Island University senior
Selma Babic defeated Fairleigh Dickinson's Elmine Botes to win the No. 1 singles bracket at the Eastern Championships, hosted by Army. Babic won a thrilling third set, 10-6, to take the title over Botes.
Babic took the first set over her fellow Northeast Conference foe by a score of 6-3. Botes then battled back in the second, escaping with a 7-6 win before Babic claimed the crown with a 10-6 win.

On Saturday, Babic dealt top-seeded Annie Houghton a 6-2; 6-3 defeat in the quarterfinals before dealing third-seeded Magdelena Ploch from Massachusetts a 1-6; 6-1; 10-7 loss.

Selma Babic defeated Ira Aleksova of St. John's, 6-2; 6-1. She then dealt Rhode Island's Kirsten Leikem a defeat by the same score to move on to the quarterfinals on Saturday, Sept. 26 against top-seeded Annie Houghton of Army.
In the No. 2 singles bracket, freshman
Aleksandra Pavlovic captured an opening-round victory over Ayashi Sinha of Providence, 6-1;6-1. She began to battle Army's Erin Colton in the round of 16 but the match was called due to darkness and will resume on Saturday.

Linn Sjogren fell to West Virginia's Veronica Cardenas, 6-2; 6-3, in the opening round of the No. 3 bracket, but she defeated Bowdoin's Liz Pedonte, 8-1, in the third consolation bracket. Sjogren moves on to tangle with Emme Leibowicz of Binghamton.
At No. 4 singles, freshman
Taysha Blessington scored an opening-round win over St. Bonaventure's Kalia Garcia-Rojas, 6-0; 6-2, before falling to Massachusetts' Chantal Swiszcz, 6-4; 6-2.

Dara Lahens won its opening round match over Sacred Heart's Kristina Chao and Delaney Downing, 8-3. In the round of 16, the Long Island team fell to Cornell's duo of Sarah O'Neil and Susan Sullivan, 8-4.
The women's tennis squad is back in action at the USTA Invitational on October 9-11 in Flushing, N.Y.
