Tournament Title Nets NEC Player of the Week Nod for Babic

Brooklyn, N.Y. - Long Island University senior Selma Babic was named the Northeast Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week after capturing the championship in the No. 1 singles bracket at the Eastern Championships. In her fall debut, Babic won five matches, including a quarterfinal win over the tournament's No. 1 seed.

In the opening round, the reigning NEC Player of the Year defeated Ira Aleksova of St. John's, 6-2; 6-1. She then dealt Rhode Island's Kirsten Leikem a defeat by the same score in the round of 16.

On the second day of action, Babic knocked off the tournament's top seed, Army's Annie Houghton 6-2; 6-3 in the quarterfinals before dealing third-seeded Magdelena Ploch from Massachusetts a 1-6; 6-1; 10-7 loss.

In the finals, Babic defeated Fairleigh Dickinson's Elmine Botes, winning a thrilling third set, 10-6, to take the title. Babic took the first set over her fellow Northeast Conference foe by a score of 6-3. Botes then battled back in the second, escaping with a 7-6 win before Babic claimed the crown with the 10-6 win.
