Bronx, N.Y. - The Long Island University men's and women's track teams competed in the Fordham Christmas Classic on Friday night at the Lombardi Fieldhouse in the Bronx, N.Y. The Blackbirds continued their early season sucess with a number of top finishes, including the number one spots in both 4x400-meter relay events.
On the women's side, senior Ashley Veney continued her winning ways, grabbing the top spot in the 60-meter dash, running a 7.6. In the 200-meter dash, Long Island went 1-2-4 with junior Jazmin Waller earning first place with a time of 24.9. Junior Jessie Gaines was right behind with a time of 25.1, and sophomore Amber Mitchell clocked in with a 25.7.
The Blackbird quartet of Waller, Junior Torrie Saunders, Mitchell and Gaines took the number one spot in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:01.4. A second 4x400-meter relay team of senior Desiree Conley, sophomore Tricia Beckles, freshman Marielena Riviera, and junior Emily Rosario earned thrid place in the event, running a 4:08.5.
On the men's side, senior Sam Egadu won the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.8. Junior team mate Robert Barnes was just behind in second place with a time of 7.0. Junior Nickolei Mahlung, sophomore Brian Richards, and sophomore Wilmot Stubblefield swept the 200-meter dash, runnning 22.2, 22.4, and 23.4, respectively.
In the middle distance events, senior Elmo Neckles was third in the 500-meter dash, running a 1:07.2. Senior Julius Mutekanga was the number one runner in the 1000-meter run, clocking in at 2:30.7.
LIU took the top three spots in the men's 4x400-meter relay. Junior Adham Conaway, Richards, Mahlung and Stubblefield made up the number one squad, running a 3:25.2. Barnes, Neckles, freshman Kenneth Wallace-Whitfield and sophomore Nelson Mora grabbed the number two spot with a 3:26.5. The third team raced to a 3:28.6 featuring sophomore Chris Welch, Egadu, senior Corryl Boyd, and junior Amire Solomon.
The Blackbirds break for the holiday and are back in 2011 at the Metropolitan Coaches Inviational on Jan. 7 at the Armory in New York, N.Y.
