Hackensack, N.J. – The Long Island men's and women's track and field teams saw their first action of the 2010-11 season at the Knight Classic hosted by Fairleigh Dickinson University. Both sides saw a handful of impressive individual finishes as well as two first place relay team finishes.
In men's action, senior Samuel Egadu took second in the 600-meter dash, running a 1:23.00. He was followed by senior Corryl Boyd, who took third with a time of 1:23.30. Senior Elmo Neckles grabbed the number one spot in the 1,000-meter run, clocking in at 2:46.7.
Senior Julius Mutekanga anchored the first place 4 x 800-meter relay team. Sophomore Kenneth Whitfield-Wallace, sophomore Chris Welch, and freshman Nelson Mora rounded out the squad, and recorded an 8:01.7 in the event.
On the women's side, seniors Ashley Veney and Christine Jones went 1-2 in the 300-meter dash, running a 41.1 and 41.9, respectively. Senior Desiree Conley earned third place in the 1,000-meter run, clocking a 3:08.3.
The relay team of junior Jessie Gaines, senior Jazmin Waller, junior Torrie Saunders, and sophomore Amber Mitchell took first in the 4 x 400-meter relay, racing to a 3:59.3.
The event was scored dual style, and the men went 1-4, picking up a win over St. Peter's. The women fared slightly better, going 2-3 on the day and picking up wins against Iona and St. Peter's.
Long Island is hoping to compete in another meet before that holiday break at a location to be announced. Otherwise, they open 2011 at the Metropolitan Collegiate Coaches Invitational at the Armory in New York, N.Y.
