Brooklyn, N.Y. - For the third straight week, the Long Island University women's tennis team has swept the Northeast Conference's installment of weekly awards. Senior
Selma Babic took home the NEC Player of the Week award for the fourth straight week and fifth time this season. Freshman
Taysha Blessington was named the NEC Rookie of the Week.
Babic went 3-0 and the No. 1 singles position over the week as the Blackbirds went 1-2. In a 7-0 win over Fordham on April 1, she defeated Martina Featherson, 6-0; 6-1. Babic performed even better the next day, hanging a 6-0; 6-0 loss on Monmouth's Nicole Lippens in another 7-0 sweep. Babic rounded out the week with a 6-3; 6-2 victory over Julija Korshunova in Long Island's 4-3 loss to Fairleigh Dickinson on April 5.
In doubles action, Babic teamed with freshman
Aleksandra Pavlovic to win three matches at the top spot. The duo defeated Fordham's Taylor Holt and Bethany Boyle, 8-1, Monmouth's Lippens and Katie Tierney, 8-2, and Fairleigh Dickinson's Korshunova and Egzona Morina, 8-4.
Blessington also went undefeated in singles play, winning three matches at the No. 4 position. She defeated Fordham's Jenny Mullen, 6-0; 6-0, before downing Tierney by the same score. Against Fairleigh Dickinson's Morina, Blessington gave up her only game losses of the week, defeating Morina by a still impressive 6-2; 6-0 decision.
Blessington added a pair of doubles wins at No. 4, teaming with senior H'Ann Johnson to defeat Fordham's Sarah Tremaine and Mullen, 8-2, and Monmouth's Dana Ferrari and Diane Washer, 8-2.
Long Island will return to action on Friday, April 9 when the Blackbirds host Rhode Island at the USTA Tennis Center at 3:00 p.m.
