Selma Babic will open play in the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Tournament against Denver University's Ute Schnoy at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 26, at the Dan McGill Tennis Complex at the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga. Babic earned the Northeast Conference's automatic bid to the tournament after being ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Top 125. The winner of the Babic/Schnoy match will advance to face the winner of No. 4-ranked Hilary Barte (Stanford) and No. 52 Michaela Kissell (Marshall) on May 27.
Babic, Long Island's Female Athlete of the Year, is the first Blackbird to advance to the NCAA singles tournament after compiling a 19-1 record in singles play. She went 14-1 in dual-match action at the No. 1 position and won the No. 1 singles title at the Easter Championships in the fall. A winner of 13 straight matches, Babic was a perfect 6-0 against Northeast Conference foes.
The two-time NEC Player of the Year also earned All-NEC First Team honors at No. 1 singles and All-NEC Second Team at No. 1 doubles with her partner, freshman
Aleksandra Pavlovic and was a six-time NEC Player of the Week. Babic led the Blackbirds to their second-straight conference championship this spring and helped the team advance to the NCAA Tournament where they faced 10th-seeded Duke in the opening round.
Schnoy earned All-Sun Belt Conference honors for the second consecutive year after posting a 14-8 record at No. 1 singles and will also compete in the round of 32 doubles draw on Thursday, May 27.
