Athens, Ga. - Long Island University senior
Selma Babic dropped a match to Denver's Ute Schnoy in straight sets in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Tournament. The 6-2; 6-1 loss snapped a 12-match winning streak for Long Island's Female Athlete of the Year.
Babic, who is ranked No. 121 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, started out strong in the first set, winning the first two games, but the tide quickly turned as No. 82 Schnoy was victorious in six straight games to take the first set. Schnoy kept up her momentum in the second set, running out to a 3-0 lead en route to a 6-1 match-clinching win.
The loss eliminated Babic, who was the first player in Long Island and Northeast Conference history to play in the NCAA singles tournament. The two-time NEC Player of the Year finished with a 19-2 record in her final season as a Blackbird. Schnoy improved to 14-9.
