Tennis Kicks Off Fall Season at Stony Brook Invitational

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Long Island University women's tennis team lifted the lid on the 2010 fall season at the Stony Brook Invitational. Three sets of Blackbirds took part in two different doubles flights at the tournament on the first day of action and Long Island took to the singles courts on day two.

In the A Singles Flight, sophomore Aleksandra Pavlovic fell to Fairleigh Dickinson's Julia Prantl, 8-0. Classmate Linn Sjogren fared better following an opening-round bye. In the round of 16, she dealt Army's Jessica Ahn an 8-6 loss. Sjogren fell to Fairleigh Dickinson's Elmine Botes, the eventual champion, in the round of eight by an 8-3 margin.

Sophomore Taysha Blessington followed up a first-round bye in the B Singles Flight with an 8-3 loss to Radford's Ivana Tomaic. Senior Dara Lahens fell in the round of 32 to Bryant's Jessica Vickers, 8-5.

In the C Singles Flight, junior Zelie Pfeiffer had a bye before falling to Stony Brook's Gayatri Krishnan by a score of 8-3. Freshman Fatima Ouattara also had a bye, but lost to NJIT's Ivina Mayevska, 8-1.

 

Doubles play opened up the first day of the tournament. In the A Doubles Flight, the duo of Lahens and Sjogren earned a victory in the round of 32 with an 8-3 decision over Lehigh's Patricia Muething and Taylor Hempshire. In the next round, the Blackbird duo fell to Army's Ahn and Della Taylor by an 8-5 margin.

 

After a bye in the first A Doubles Flight round, Long Island's pairing of Blessington and Pavlovic lost to Fairleigh Dickinson's Botes and Irina Dementyeva, 8-5, in the round of 16.

 

In the B Doubles Flight, the Long Island newcomer duo of Pfeiffer and Ouattara received a bye in the first round only to fall to Navy's Darien Sears and Julie Snook, 9-8.

 

The Stony Brook Invitational wrapped up on Sunday, Sept. 19 with unofficial one-on-one doubles action.
