West Point, N.Y. - The Long Island University women's tennis team kicked off play at the Eastern Championships, hosted by Army, with a doubles win. The Blackbirds also saw action in four different singles flights.
In the A Doubles Flight, the duo of freshman Fatima Ouattara and sophomore Linn Sjogren earned a bye in the opening round before defeating Lehigh's Liz Piscitelli and Jillian Sloan in the round of 16, 8-4.
In A Singles action, sophomore Aleksandra Pavlovic scored an opening-round win over Sacred Heart's Elizabeth Harrington, 6-3; 6-2. Pavlovic went on to lose to Army's Annie Houghton, 6-2; 6-1, in the next round.
In the B Singles Flight, sophomore Taysha Blessington fell to St. John's Ksenia Mikhaylova, 6-4; 6-2. Senior Dara Lahens suffered a similar fate in the opening round of the C Singles Flight, losing to Seton Hall's Elizabeth Verow, 6-4; 6-2. In the D Singles Flight, Zelie Pfeiffer lost to Connecticut's Lucy Nutting, 6-4; 6-3.
Long Island will continue tournament play on Saturday, Sept. 25.
