Day One
West Point, N.Y. - The Long Island University women's tennis team took to the courts on the second day of action at the Eastern Championships, hosted by Army. The Blackbirds participated in a plethora of consolation brackets after wrapping up championship bracket play.
The lone Long Island representatives to advance in championship play after the first day, sophomore Linn Sjogren and freshman Fatima Ouattara were handed an 8-5 loss by Amherst's Natasha Brown and Caroline Richman in the A Doubles Flight quarterfinals.
In the main consolation bracket of the D Singles Flight, freshman Zelie Pfeiffer defeated Bryant's May Vickers, 8-4, before downing St. Bonaventure's Maria Barousse, 8-0. Pfieffer beat Alyssa Liantonia of St. John's, 8-0, in the semifinal round and was awarded the final match when Connecticut's Abby McKeon did not play.
In other assorted consolation action, sophomore Taysha Blessington earned 8-2 wins over Holy Cross' Mary Welch and Bowdoin's Nikki Kuna to win the Buckner Singles Bracket. In the Survival Singles Alpha Bracket, Blessington fell to St. Bonaventure's Amanda Pallikunnel, 8-5.
In the Honor Singles Alpha Bracket, sophomore Aleksandra Pavlovic lost to Army's Jessica Ahn, 8-4. Senior Dara Lahens scored a win over Lehigh's Kiera Murasko-Blank, 8-5, in the Survival Singles Beta Bracket before falling to NJIT's Megan Guidry, 9-8 (7).
Play concluded at the Eastern Championships on Sunday, Sept. 26 with the championship contests of each of the main brackets and one-on-one doubles play. Blessington earned a pair of one-on-one doubles wins before being eliminated.
