Blackbirds Compete at NYU Gotham Cup

The Long Island University men's and women's track and field teams were in action at the Armory on Friday night at the NYU Gotham Cup, where three individuals qualified for the postseason ECAC/IC4A meet. The men's 4x800-meter relay team also qualified and set a new school record in the event.
 
The quartet of sophomore Chris Welch, senior Julius Mutekanga, sophomore Kenneth Wallace Whitfield and freshman Nelson Mora made up the record-breaking team, racing to a 7:51.49 in the event, good enough for third place.
 
Senior Corryl Boyd took third place in the 400-meter dash, running a 49.22. Mutekanga took first in the 500-meter dash, running a 1:02.59, good enough for ECAC/IC4A qualifying time. Welch and Wallace Whitfield went 3-4 in the 800-meter run, clocking in at 1:57.22 and 1:57.47, respectively.
 
In the jumps, sophomore Brian Richards took fifth place in the long jump with a leap of 6.88 meters while senior Amire Solomon earned third place in the triple jump and spot at the ECAC/IC4A meet with a jump of 14.68 meters.
 
On the women's side, junior Jessie Gaines reached two ECAC/IC4A marks, in the 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles. Her 7.74 in the dash was good enough for fifth place and her 8.61 in the hurdles was good enough for third. Junior Torrie Saunders was fifth in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking in at 8.83. Junior Jazmin Waller grabbed third in the long jump with a leap of 5.55 meters.
 
The Blackbirds return to the Armory on Jan. 21 for the Great Dane Classic.
