New York, N.Y. – The Long Island University men's and women's track and field squads were both fifth in the team standings at the Metropolitan Indoor Championships at the Armory on Saturday night. The men were bolstered by four first place finishes, while the women logged one first and four second place finishes.
Senior Corryl Boyd kicked off the meet with a gold in the 60-meter dash, clocking in at 6.97. Freshman Eric Williams also had a strong performance in the event, coming in fifth with a time of 7.11. Senior Sam Egadu took first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.27, while classmate Julius Mutekanga continued his winning ways in the 500-meter run with a time of 1:02.00.
Junior Robert Barnes came in third in the 200-meter dash, recording a time of 22.75. Barnes then paired with Mutekanga, Egadu and Boyd in the 4x400-meter relay, where the Blackbirds claimed the gold with a time of 3:14.81.
In the jumps, sophomore Brian Richards took the number one spot in the long jump with a leap of 7.09 meters, while junior Wilmot Stubblefield was fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 13.87 meters.
On the women's side, junior
Jessie Gaines came in second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.66. Junior
Torrie Saunders was second in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking in at 8.74.
Gaines led the Long Island jumpers, coming in first in the triple jump with a leap of 11.61 meters. Senior
Danay Spencer and Saunders were second and fifth in the event, jumping to marks of 11.47 meters and 11.30 meters, respectively. Waller was second in the high jump, clearing a mark of 1.65 meters, and Mitchell was third in the long jump, with a leap of 5.34 meters.
Long Island competes next at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational on Feb. 4-5 at the Armory in New York, N.Y.
